SkinCeuticals’ NEW Advanced Corrective Peel

skinceuticals-gel-peel_1Q: What makes this peel different from other SkinCeuticals peels?

A: This new SkinCeuticals peel is the deepest and most advanced peel SkinCeuticals has produced to date.  This peel works in the lowest layer of the epidermis, the basal layer, where live tissue and pigment dwell.  It is considered a deep, superficial chemical peel.

Q: What is this peel comprised of?

A: This peel contains 14% salicylic acid, 14% lactic acid, and 10% phenylethyl resorcinol. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark and exfoliates, unclogs pores, and regulates oil production.  Lactic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sour milk that exfoliates, hydrates, and has disinfectant properties. Phenylethyl Resorcinol is an antioxidant derived from Scotch pine bark that lightens hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase (an enzyme that causes hyperpigmentation). This game-changing combination of ingredients exfoliate and regulate skin discoloration, and have never been used together in a chemical peel until now.

Q: What can I expect during and after this peel?

A: During application, as with most all peels, your skin will feel tingly and spicy.  Your aesthetician will apply 1-3 passes depending on your skin’s reaction to each layer. This is a self-neutralizing peel, so it is very safe and predictable.  Once applied it will continue to work for 4 hours in a controlled, slow release manner.  It is important to not apply anything containing water to the skin for that initial 4 hour period to avoid irritation; this includes liquid makeup.  You will also want to avoid exercise and extreme heat for the first 24 hours to avoid discomfort. Flaking and peeling will begin between 24-36 hours and will last for 3-10 days.  Your post peel skin care protocol is comprised of all gentle products and of course chemical-free sunscreen.  After the peeling process is complete you will notice complexion improvement including smoother texture, suppressed lines, more even skin tone, and a beautiful glow.

All 5 of our aestheticians are trained and certified in the NEW SkinCeuticals Advanced Corrective Peel, and will be happy to consult with you and answer any questions you may have about this unique treatment.

Thinking Your Hands Look too Old?

A common complaint we hear from women is that they notice their hands aging and looking older. Many of these ladies have just completed a blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) or neck lift and now feel that the back of their hands look older than their face. This was a problem without a quick and easy solution.

However, now Merz Pharma Group, the maker of the long term filler Radiesse, said this week it has received regulatory approval to sell the nation’s first injectable “filler” to improve the appearance of bony, aging hands.

Merz North America plans to market the product, Radiesse, to the one million-plus Americans who receive face lifts, injections and other facial treatments and want youthful-looking hands to match their rejuvenated faces.

We are already using Radiesse at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery to enhance the chin, lift the cheeks, and fix nasal deformities, but now we can also use it for improving the appearance of the hands. This will appeal to many women, even soon to be brides who want beautiful hands to show off their wedding rings. The process, known as volumizing, fills out the hand and reduces the prominence of tendons and veins.

Radiesse injection can cause nodules, bumps or lumps in the back of the hand and can last up to a one year; the most common side effects are temporary bruising, redness, swelling, pain, itching.

Q: Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

A: See image below. If you feels your hands look bony, thin, or old, you may be a candidate for injection of Radiesse. The procedure takes only half an hour and will usually utilize two syringes of Radiesse. The typical cost is $1400 and will usually last 9-12 months.

Second photo shows both hands. The patient’s right hand has been injected with filler, but the left hand has not. This was accomplished using one syringe of Radiesse.

What is a Liquid FaceLift?

Have you heard the term “liquid lift, or liquid facelift” when searching the internet or reading a magazine? If you have, and wondered what that means, then the following article will be very interesting and informative for you.

Q:  What is the “liquid face lift?”

A:   This is a term used when facial cosmetics is improved using only fillers and other non-surgical modalities. For instance, a patient may have fillers injected into the cheeks, eyelids, oral areas, and temples, while having Botox injected into the forehead, brows, eyes, and neck. This accomplishes a very nice, sometimes dramatic, improvement without having to undergo surgery.

Q:   Am I a candidate for the “liquid lift?”

A:   The best candidates for a liquid lift are patients with early to moderate facial aging who are not quite ready for eyelid lift, facelift, or midface lifts. This would be best determined during a consultation. We usually assess the patient, their goals, downtime limits, degree of facial aging, and whether the procedure is financially better than a surgical approach. Patients in their 40’s and early 50’s are usually the best suited for this treatment. They will have a very nice, restoration of youthfulness without looking surgically altered and requiring no time away from work.

Q:   What injections are commonly used for this?

A:    We usually determine the best filler to use based on areas we want to improve. A fine filler like Restylane© would be used for the lower lid creases, and smile lines around the mouth. A middle volume filler like Juvaderm© is best for the lips, corner of the mouth, chin, and nasolabial folds. Heavy lifters, like Voluma©, and Radiesse©, are best used to augment the cheeks, temples, lateral brows, and deformities of the nose.  Finally, Sculptra©, is used to thicken the skin and add more fullness to the entire face. In conjunction with these, we often used Dysport or Botox to soften the appearance of the brow furrows, lift the eyebrows, relax the squint lines around the eyes, and even to relax the lines around the lips and in the neck.  Again, the decision about what products to use is left up to a full discussion between you and your surgeon or nurse practitioner.

Q:   What is the downtime I should expect?

A:    Downtime is usually only about 24-48 hours. During this time you will have some swelling, and mild bruising. You can shower and use makeup right away. We recommend using ice and elevating your head on pillows the day of the procedure. You can go back to work the next day if you feel like you are ready. You may go back to working out after 48 hours.

Q:   How long does this type of treatment last?

A:   Depending on the types of fillers used (each has a different length of action), you should expect to get between 6-9 months from one treatment, although many patients report high satisfaction at one year. Botox© and Dysport© usually last 3-4 months. This treatment is best for patients who want to look their best during an event or Holiday season for example.

Q    Can I combine this with any other procedures?

A:   Yes, a liquid lift can be combined with other procedures to improve the health of the skin and look of the face. This is commonly combined with medical facial treatments, and medical grade skin care to improve the skin texture, tone, and color.  Also, we use skin tightening lasers (read about HALO and BBL) to improve the skin texture and sun damage. Together, facial volumization and advanced skin treatment, results in a dramatic improvement in facial appearance and youthfulness.

Rhinoplasty 101

Rhinoplasty in Jacksonville, FLRhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that reshapes your nose. If you feel like your nose is out of proportion to the rest of your face, or if you are embarrassed about the size or shape of your nose, rhinoplasty may be a good option for you. Here’s what you should know about the procedure:

Before the procedure, your doctor will give you instructions. Follow these instructions closely. Before the procedure, make arrangements for someone to drive you home after the surgery is over and make arrangements to take 7-10 days off of work. You should also set up a recovery area with plenty of pillows, and prepare ice packs ahead of time. Remember not to take anti-inflammatory drugs before the procedure since they could interfere with the surgery and the healing process. It is also important to quit smoking, if you do smoke, since smoking can increase risks during the surgery and hinder the healing process.

The procedure will probably take 1-2 hours. Local anesthesia or general anesthesia will be used depending on your individual situation. During the procedure, the surgeon will make adjustments depending on your current nose shape and your desired nose shape. In some cases cartilage will be removed from the edge of the nose, in other cases excess bone and cartilage will be removed to get rid of a bump on the nose. This surgery can also be used to make the nose more narrow, to make the nostrils less prominent, or to correct a previously broken nose. The specific procedure will vary based on each individual.

After the procedure is complete, the surgeon will use a splint to hold the shape of the nose. In some cases, splints or padding will also be placed inside the nose. Splints can usually be removed a few days after the surgery.   Most patients can return home the same day, but they’ll need someone else to drive. Once you get home, keep your head elevated (even while sleeping), apply a cold compress to your nose to reduce swelling and pain, use a saline nose spray to keep the nose moist, and avoid touching your nose as much as possible.   To learn more about the procedure, contact Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery for a consultation.

More stock images - 102Summer weather can be a great time to enjoy the sunshine, beaches, and local pool, but unfortunately, many women spend the summer months cooped up because they aren’t confident enough to put on a swimsuit and go enjoy themselves.

Don’t let low self-confidence hold you back this summer—find out how to put on your bikini or swimsuit with pride.

1. Maintain A Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight will help you feel confident when you put on your swimsuit. The following smart habits can help:

  • Take the stairs whenever you have the opportunity
  • Eat breakfast every day
  • Avoid snacking late at night
  • Eat a balanced diet instead of getting most of your food from carbohydrates
  • Drink water instead of soda or juice
  • Prepare healthy snacks like carrot sticks, apple slices, and almonds to curb hunger throughout the day
  • Socialize with friends who support your goals and encourage you to make progress

2. Improve Your Muscle Tone

Looking great in a swimsuit is about much more than being thin, good muscle tone will also help you wear that bikini with confidence. To improve your muscle tone, get protein from Greek yogurt, milk, nuts, and fish, then work strength training into your daily workouts.

Yoga, Pilates, swimming, weight lifting, and boxing can all improve your muscle tone and add definition to your body. Pick an activity that you enjoy, or rotate through a few of your favorites to prevent burn out and boredom.

3. Prevent Bloating

Even very thin people can face bloating which makes tight clothing uncomfortable and less attractive.  To avoid bloating, stay hydrated, eat slowly, avoid eating too much dairy,  don’t drink carbonated beverages, don’t overeat, and avoid swallowing too much air while chewing gum. This will help you avoid the discomfort and self-consciousness that comes with a bloated tummy.

4. Use Liposuction to Target Stubborn Spots

For those places that exercise and healthy diet can’t budge, liposuction can be a great solution. This procedure targets excess fat, especially around the hips, abdomen, and thighs. It works best if you’re already at a stable weight, but want to eliminate stubborn bulges.  Visit Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery to learn more about this option.
