Tired of being told your symptoms are normal?

How ThermiVa has helped me after child birth:

meagan 3

I am a 32 year old full time working mom of a beautiful three year old little boy.  Pregnancy and child birth changed a lot about my body.  Some of the things are easy fixes and other I had come to accept as the new normal, like being nervous if I felt a big sneeze coming on. All of which is a small price to pay for the joys of being a mom.  One of my favorite things about my job is hearing about all the new up and coming treatments available and being in the know before the general public.  Our staff at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery started receiving education on a new treatment called ThermiVa…vaginal rejuvenation.  I remember when I heard vaginal rejuvenation I thought to myself “Wow  I never thought that would need rejuvenating.”  I went through the training and while intrigued I was hesitant because  let’s be honest that might be a little bit of an awkward experience.  So I put it in the back of my mind and didn’t really start seriously considering it until my coworker, Beth, shared her experience with me after her treatments.  She was literally singing its praises and gave me all the details.  So I decided to give it a try.  I figured if I had one treatment and it was just too awkward that I didn’t have to have another one.  So I made my appointment and saw Suzanne, our nurse practitioner at the Nocatee office.  It was anything but awkward.  She made me feel extremely comfortable throughout the whole experience and I saw an improvement after my first treatment.  I had two other treatments after that each 4 weeks apart, and will have yearly touch up treatments.  I no longer get nervous before a sneeze, and my husband even commented he noticed a difference.  This amazing new treatment has allowed me to no longer have to accept the changes pregnancy and child birth caused.

Sealed With A Kiss……

For several years I got Juvederm injections to plump my thinning lips.  I loved the look but unfortunately, it only lasted 3-4 months for me, so the expense mounted with the frequency of the fillers.  When Dr. Sternberg told me about lip implants I jumped at the chance to have them inserted!  No more injections and every morning I look in the mirror and think, “oh, it looks like I just had my lips injected.”  It is a very natural look and no one knows I have the implants until I mention it.

It can be done under local anesthesia, like you get when you go to the dentist.  Mine were done during a surgical procedure I had planned.  I knew someone who had it done weeks before under local anesthesia, so I got to see her lips and knew what to expect.  She said she could not drink through a straw, as she was told to do (per post procedure guidelines), but could only eat with a baby spoon for several days.  I found I could not use a spoon, but could better use a straw for the first several days. I also applied ice to the lips which felt good and helped with the slight swelling.  I returned to the office a week later with very little swelling noticeable and had 2 small stitches removed from the corner of my mouth.

I have had my lip implants for 4 years now and still love them.  I don’t think about the fact that they are implanted, as they’ve become a part of me.  I can feel the implants if I press my lips together, otherwise, it’s life as usual.  I encourage anyone who has routine lip injections for restore volume to consider having implants placed and make an appointment to meet with one of our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery. You will love them!!

Brow Lift or Eyelid Surgery, Which is Right for You?

The eyebrows rest along the bony socket above the eyes, where the orbital rim lies. With age, the position of the brow can fall lower than the bony ridge, making the eyes appear smaller, tired, and angry. The change in brow position may occur due to the natural loss of elasticity in the skin, and may be exacerbated by the downward pull of muscles around the eyes.
Thanks to the development of cosmetic injectibles, some people may be able to address a drooping brow with Botox. However, this solution is not right for everyone. There are several factors to take into consideration. In some cases, the question is not “surgery or no surgery?,” but “brow lift or eyelid surgery?”

What is a Brow Lift?

The brow lift is a precise procedure that lifts tissue from brow to hairline. The technique not only opens up the eyes and repositions the brow across the orbital rim, but also lifts the forehead. There are several surgical techniques which may be employed to complete the brow lift, each intended for a specific result. For instance, a lateral brow lift will focus on the outer corners of the brow, rather than the center.

What is Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is performed with the intent of removing excess skin on the upper or lower eyelid area. With age, the fibrous bands of collagen and elastin that keep skin taut begin to fray. In a weakened state, they can no longer support elasticity, and the skin begins to sag. The weaker the matrix of collagen, the looser skin becomes. Some patients who seek blepharoplasty do so for cosmetic reasons, while others require functional blepharoplasty to improve vision. Yes, skin can become so saggy that it hangs down in front of the eye!

Which Procedure do You Need?

There is a simple way to assess whether you may need a brow lift or eyelid surgery. If you stand in front of a mirror with your facial muscles relaxed, and use your fingers to lift up the forehead and brows, you will see what a brow lift can do for you. If the skin on the eyes does not lift when you do this, eyelid surgery may be the best choice. However, keep in mind that these two procedures are often performed together to achieve the most complementary outcome.

The best way to see what cosmetic eye surgery can do for you is to consult with an experienced physician. Stop imagining and start planning.

No Pain, No Gain? Not So with Fractional Laser Treatment

Laser technology has become integral to the medical care delivered today. Different laser devices have been developed for specific purposes. In the hands of a skilled clinician, lasers can be used to address just about any skin condition that you may encounter.

The original laser treatments that were used for aesthetic improvement tended to be ablative in nature. Ablative laser treatment is conducted to remove the outermost layer of skin cells. Additionally, underlying tissues are heated in order to promote the regeneration of collagen fibers to achieve tighter, more radiant skin. An approach that can ultimately improve the tone, texture, and elasticity of the skin, ablative treatment is also not without certain disadvantages. These include a risk of discoloration, scarring, and infection. Less severe side effects include prolonged redness and swelling in the treatment area.

Fractional Laser Treatment: A Gentler Approach

The development of fractional laser devices has been a significant improvement in the way we address cosmetic and dermatologic concerns. This method can achieve beautiful results, but with a much lesser degree of risk and side effects.

Fractional laser resurfacing is a non-ablative treatment that is intended for collagen rebuilding. Collagen is vital to the overall appearance of the skin, yet the body makes less and less as it ages. With fractional lasers, we stimulate collagen production without taking off the top layer of skin. The gentler approach results in gradual improvement with only minimal redness that lasts a few days.

How Fractional Laser Treatment Works

Unlike traditional lasers, the fractional device emits thousands of beams of light rather than one. Each column is only a fraction of the size of a hair follicle. Because only micro-areas of the skin are affected by the laser, there is a heightened response from healthy surrounding tissues in the restructuring of collagen.

In addition to the collagen stimulation that is compounded by healthy skin, the minimal disruption to cells promotes a faster recovery. The gentleness of fractional laser resurfacing causes progressive improvement in the appearance of melasma, hyperpigmentation from sun damage, rough texture, and fine lines and wrinkles. One to two sessions may be scheduled, depending on the desired outcome.

Like other laser treatments, fractional lasers are varied in what they are designed to do. Whereas one may be chosen to address photoaging, another type may be selected for wrinkle-reduction.

At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, you can find surgical and non-surgical solutions to your aesthetic concerns.

Waist Training or a Tummy Tuck: Which is Right for You?

There is an interesting phenomenon in current culture that has some reaching back into ancient times to try beauty enhancing methods that haven’t been used in centuries. One such practice is waist training. Because several beauty icons of today have been very obvious about their waist training practices (Thanks, Kardashians!), there is a fair amount of confusion pertaining to the efficacy – and the safety of these products.

Obviously, waist training is considered by people who want to improve the contours of their body. While we understand the draw of non-surgical contouring, it is very important that men and women seeking physical improvement know what they may be getting themselves into.

Waist Training 101

Training the waist is a practice that women have performed for far too long. This method of altering the structure of the mid-section dates back to Ancient African and Asian cultures. It was seen again in the 1500s, when women laced themselves tightly into corsets hidden beneath clothing. To train the waist often meant to wear a restrictive garment for several days or several weeks at a time. This is because it takes time to morph the body to your will.

It is understandable to desire attractive contours. What is not understandable is altering the structure of your rib cage in order to achieve a slimming effect. Waist training affects more than the waist, it can cause the lower ribs to turn inward, ultimately displacing internal organs. This cannot be beneficial from a health standpoint.

How About an Exercise Waist Trainer?

In an attempt to make waist training safe, some have resorted to promoting the waist trainer only during exercise. This type of trainer is like the ultimate spandex belt, designed to compress tissues to push out excess water. The issue with an exercise trainer is that it produces only temporary results while also inhibiting oxygen uptake. Without sufficient oxygen during your workouts, you are likely to wind up on the floor, wondering what happened.

Turn to the Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, has helped millions of men and women reduce the circumference of their midsection. This precise surgical procedure can remove excess fat and tighten muscles so you can once again see your six-pack, if that is your goal. Performed under anesthesia in an accredited surgery center by a board-certified surgeon, the tummy tuck is less risky than a waist trainer, and gives you results without putting your health at risk.

Taking Care of Your Brand New Nose

Whether your nose surgery was for cosmetic or functional reasons, you want to recover as soon as possible after the surgery without experiencing any complications. At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, we know that your recovery is important to the overall success of your procedure.
Your initial recovery will take two weeks or more, although you will have residual swelling for a few weeks. Here are some tips to give you a speedy recovery from this game-changing cosmetic procedure:

  • Limit facial muscle movements — Recovery from rhinoplasty is only temporary, so try to limit laughing and smiling — being careful to not open it too hard and too wide. Keep your nose from stretching too much or from being hit. In addition to that, opt for food that is easy to chew. Limit harder foods to chew such as steak.
  • Protect your nose from the sun — Unprotected sun exposure can cause permanent discoloration in your nose after rhinoplasty. Apply 30+ spf sunscreen and wear protective clothing.
  • Use the right apparel — One thing you would want to do after surgery is to wear apparel that would not require you to have physical contact on the nose area. Also, don’t wear sunglasses or reading glasses. If you need regular glasses tape them above your bridge. During this time, avoid tops that must be pulled over your head, such as sweaters and t-shirts. Button-down shirts are your best choice as you recover, as they minimize nose movement and possible bumping while changing.
  • Just do light exercises — Fitness junkies can adjust to lighter workouts that restrict the up-and-down movement of the body. Also, don’t participate in sports that put you at risk of hitting your nose. Lastly, your nose may feel tender during recovery, which makes swimming, diving, and similar exercise a temporary no-no until you’re fully healed.

With the right tips and adequate patience, gracefully recovering from rhinoplasty is easy. For other recovery tips, the team at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery can answer any of your questions.

Is A Facelift Right For You?

A rhytidectomy, more commonly known as a facelift, is a procedure that can take years off of your face and help you feel more confident and attractive. While this procedure isn’t right for everyone, it does come with many benefits. Keep reading to learn more about the procedure and find out if it is a good option for you.

How does a facelift work?

As people get older skin sags and extra fat deposits can leave you looking older and heavier than you feel. During a traditional facelift, incisions are made near the hairline and the skin is raised from the face so that the underlying tissues can be tightened and repositioned. Excess skin is also removed during the procedure. Facelifts are usually used to correct issues with the lower two thirds of the face, but if you’d like to address other areas, facelifts can often be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as neck lifts, blepharoplasty, brow lifts, and skin treatments.

Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

A facelift is just one of many cosmetic procedures available. Your doctor can help you explore your options and choose a procedure that suits you. A facelift isn’t the right option for everyone.

The following people should consider alternatives:

  • People who are still quite young and just want to make small improvements • People who aren’t comfortable undergoing surgery.
  • People who only want to improve one thing—for example patients should consider dermal fillers if they just want to get fuller lips.

Good candidates for a facelift include:

  • People who’d like to see significant improvement—other cosmetic treatments provide more subtle results.
  • People who want to improve many areas of the face, not just one specific aspect.
  • People who are comfortable with surgery and healthy enough to undergo the procedure. A rhytidectomy is usually performed under general anesthesia to minimize pain and discomfort.
  • People who want long-term results—while alternatives such as Botox and dermal fillers can improve your skin, patients need repeat treatments to maintain their appearance. A facelift provides longer lasting results.

If you’d like to learn more about facelifts and other cosmetic treatments schedule a consultation at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery.

Taking Care Of The Skin Near Your Eyes

Taking good care of the skin near your eyes can keep you from looking tired and stressed. It can also help you avoid wrinkles and noticeable signs of aging. The following tips can help you look young and refreshed.

Makeup Tips

The following makeup tips can help you keep the thinner, fragile skin near your eyes healthier:

  • Be very gentle when applying makeup near your eyes: Avoid pushing to hard or pulling on the skin. In most cases, it is best to use a brush to apply the makeup, but if you do use your hands, use your ring finger, since you’re likely to apply less pressure with that finger than your index or middle finger.
  • Always remove your makeup at night: Leaving your makeup on while you sleep can lead to skin irritation, breakouts, and infection. Once again it is important to be gentle. When you’re washing makeup off near your eyes, use a soft cloth, cleanser, or petroleum jelly.
  • Replace your eye makeup every 3 months: Germs that build up in your makeup can harm your eyes and the nearby skin. In most cases you should replace mascara, concealer, eye liner, and eye shadow approximately 3 months after you open them.

Lifestyle Tips

  • Limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, since they can dry out your skin. Instead, drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated.
  • Make sleep a priority. Without enough sleep, you’re likely to have bloodshot itchy eyes. You’re also more likely to wake up with dark circles and puffiness around your eyes. This can make you look tired, stressed, and old.

Cosmetic Treatments

Cosmetic treatments can also help you protect the skin near your eyes. The simplest option is eye cream with the nutrients needed to protect the thin, fragile skin around your eyes. In most cases you should invest in special eye cream in addition to your regular face moisturizer.

Botox is another cosmetic treatment that can help improve the skin around your eyes. It can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crow’s feet that make you look older.

As you age, the skin around your eyes is more likely to droop and sag. Sagging skin on your eyelids could interfere with vision, and bagginess under the eyes can make you look old and tired even when you’re well rested. Blepharoplasty is an option for removing the excess skin and giving you younger looking, more open eyes. Schedule a consultation at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery to learn more.

Is Liposuction Right For You?

Liposuction can help you get the slimmer, sexier body you’ve always wanted. Keep reading to learn more about how it works and find out if it is a good option for you.

How does liposuction work?

uses small incisions and a vacuum shaped like a small wand to remove unwanted pockets of fat on specific areas of the body. One of the most common types of liposuction is tumescent liposuction. This type of liposuction uses a special mixture of adrenaline and anesthetic to numb the target area, control bleeding, and react with the fat inside your body to make it easier to remove.

Liposuction is often used to remove fat from the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, and arms. In some cases it can also be used on smaller areas of the body like the neck. The procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours depending on the area being treated.

What should you do to prepare for the procedure?

The most important part of preparing for the procedure is following your surgeon’s specific instructions. In general the following tips can help you prepare:

  • Stop smoking for at least two weeks before the procedure and do your best to quit completely.
  • Stop taking pain medications that act as blood thinners such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Naprosyn.
  • Keep alcohol consumption to a minimum in the days leading up to and following the surgery.
  • Drink plenty of fluids the day before the surgery.
  • Make arrangements for someone to drive you home on the day of the procedure.
  • Fill your prescriptions ahead of time so that you can rest and relax while you heal.

What should you expect afterward?

Liposuction is not incredibly invasive, but it does require some recovery time. You may experience some bruising, swelling, and discomfort in the days following the procedure. In the days following the procedure some fluid may drain from the small incisions but this is normal.

While patients need to avoid strenuous activities for up to 6 weeks, you may be able to return to normal daily activities much sooner. Your doctor can help you determine when you can resume activities and help you speed up the recovery process.

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

If you are at a healthy, stable weight, but have unwanted pockets of stubborn fat that are frustrating you and detracting from your appearance, liposuction may be a great solution. Schedule a consultation at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery to learn more.
