Go See The Brow Expert…

eyebrows

I have always been plagued my entire life with not so “on fleek brows.” I plucked at them so much as a teenager, having no clue what I was doing. This resulted in uneven brows, as far as shape, length and fullness. I also had light colored and very thin hairs in some areas.  I would attempt to fill them in on my own, plagued that each day they looked different which also drove me insane. When microblading became a trend, I did some research and was thrilled when PVPS decided to bring it on board. Alison Kuzoian the Aesthetician at our Nocatee location has had 7 years experience in permanent makeup and 2 years in the microblading technique. I saw her before and after pictures and felt extremely confident in her ability to do a phenomenal job!

I met with Alison and she explained to me how the procedure would go and asked what I would like my brows to look like. I showed her some pictures of eyebrows that I liked, and explained to her what I did not like about my own brows. Alison then used an eyebrow pencil to draw the “new eyebrows” to show me an example of how it would look. I definitely approved of the pre-drawn shape and fullness! I laid back while numbing cream was applied and Alison found the correct color that matched my natural brow hair color. The color match was perfect and I was so thrilled! The overall time and procedure spent with Alison was about 2 hours, so please plan for that time. The hair strokes are manually done and take precision and perfection…don’t ever rush perfection! The pain is minimal and with my amazing results, I would definitely do it again!

I left the office with beautiful brows, minimal swelling and no discomfort. I was given post procedure instructions to follow for the next seven days. I am due to go back in 4 weeks for a touch up and then will be good to go! My confidence level has boosted and it is so comforting to know I don’t have to stress about filling in my eyebrows and can now get away with just mascara on the days I want to be laid back. I can now say I have beautiful brows. I have Alison and PVPS to thank for that!

The below pictures were taken directly before and after the procedure.

“I Spy With My Little Eye…”

You look in the mirror and begin to notice dark spots that may not have been there before, or maybe you have had them for awhile and you finally are deciding to research ways to rid them of your skin. These dark spots you see are called sun spots, the ultimate reminder that the summer was hot and long!

The summer heat brings summer sun spots and at PVPS we offer many different treatments to help eliminate them.  Some of our most popular treatments are the BBL and the HALO. BBL has been used traditionally to treat brown and red pigmentation on the face and body and HALO resurfacing treats pigmentation, pores, fine lines, acne scars, and overall skin texture. In addition to our very popular Broadband Light Laser (BBL) and HALO resurfacing treatments, we’ve also added the NanoPeel and MicroPeel.

The NanoPeel is best described as a ‘polishing’ of the skin in addition to treating pigmentation and is a great compliment to BBL treatments.  The NanoPeel consists of little downtime and is a great ‘over the weekend’ treatment, as far as peeling goes. The face and body (including hands, feet, etc) can be treated with the Nanopeel, but require multiple treatments for best results. The MicroPeel is a deeper laser treatment which requires more downtime and recovery, but less treatments.

LED Therapy & your skin…

Anti-aging has never been easier! PVPS now offers LED light therapy

LED therapy (officially known as Light-Emitting Diode) can work wonders for our skin. This technology was originally used for household gadgets such as alarm clocks in the 1960s. Several years later NASA started using LED therapy to speed wound healing in no-gravity situations, which then led to LED being used in skin cancer treatments. The skin care industry now uses this technology to improve skin health and appearance in many ways.

LED light waves travel deeply into the skin triggering live cells to react. Red light LED actually strengthens and builds collagen! We love collagen, which is abundant in young skin and decreases as we age, so incorporating treatments that increase collagen production is extremely anti-aging. LED therapy is also anti-inflammatory, promotes increased circulation, speeds healing, reduces redness, constricts pores, and can suppress oil and acne.

This treatment is completely painless and takes about 20 minutes. It does not heat the skin, so burning is not a risk. All of the work is done below skin’s surface, so there is no damage and no down time whatsoever. It is also a perfect addition to our HydraFacial treatment.

PVPS now offers HydraFacial Elite (includes the LED therapy), and is a perfect multi-tasking skin treatment! This treatment deep cleanses, exfoliates, extracts pores, deeply infuses several nutrients, builds collagen, and renews your complexion. Your skin will glow for days! Our experienced Aestheticians offer this treatment at Ponte Vedra Beach, Southside, Amelia Island, and our Nocatee location.

We have a special going on now until 8/31/16 for the HydraFacial. Call us today to schedule your treatment at 904-273-6200.

Brown patches, age spots and Hydroquinone

hyperpigmentation

Why do I have brown patches and spots on my face?

This is caused by overstimulated and irregular pigment production, known as hyper-pigmentation. Some contributing factors are sun exposure, heat, injury, hormone fluctuations and pregnancy.

How can I improve this condition?

There are medical grade skin care products and treatments effective in improving and controlling this chronic condition.

What are effective products?

Hydroquinone (HQ) is a result oriented product to help suppress the pigment production. This pigment begins deep in the basal layer of your skin. It is recommended to use HQ for no more than 5 months.

What are the concerns of using HQ for more than 5 months?

Long term use of HQ alone can become non-effective in treating hyper-pigmentation.

Some studies have shown that there is a rare condition called exogenous ochronosis that was linked with prolonged hydroquinone use longer than 6 months. This can cause the skin to present with brown-grey or blue-black hyper-pigmentation and is very difficult to treat.

Should you immediately stop HQ if you’re using it for more than 5 months?

It is NOT recommended to abruptly stop HQ use, but to gradually wean off of it as you replace it with a medical grade NON HQ product such as Zein Obagi MD’s (ZO) Brightenex, Brightalive, or for a more mild condition, C-Bright maybe the best choice for you.

The danger in discontinuing HQ without weaning off and replacing it with an alternative pigment regulator could result in rebound hyper-pigmentation which means you may develop more unwanted pigment as the suppression of HQ has been removed.

Where can I go to have someone help me get on the right skin care regimen for my specific concerns?

You will find 6 very caring and qualified Medical Aestheticians at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery (pvps.com) able to improve skin conditions such as aging, hyper-pigmentation and acne by using medical grade products and treatments. You can also utilize our Nurse Practitioners for laser treatments such as the Halo and BBL, that can also help to fight hyper-pigmentation. Here at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery you have a team of experts at your fingertips!

Call today to schedule your complimentary consultation (904) 273-6200.

Perfect Summer Skincare Treatments

facials

During summer months we typically spend more time outdoors. Activities such as cookouts, picnics, sporting events, pool and beach time means more UV exposure. We all know how very critical daily sunscreen application and reapplication are, but what are the best skin care treatments to promote skin health and radiance during this time without down time?  The aestheticians at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery recommend the DF Facial, Hydrafacial MD, and Hydrafacial Elite.

The DF Facial is a very relaxing treatment that combines spa-like pampering with clinical benefits to the skin. During this treatment, sound waves (sonophoresis) are used to deliver vitamin A deep within the skin to build collagen. Another unique feature of this treatment is microcurrent (iontophoresis) which gently and effectively tones facial muscles; almost like pilates for the face! This entire treatment is completely painless and extremely relaxing. Your skin will be noticeably nourished, hydrated, and have a gorgeous glow after receiving the DF Facial. There is no down time with this treatment, which takes 90 minutes and the cost is $200.

Hydrafacial MD is a true clinical treatment like no other. Our aesthetician uses a machine to deep cleanse, gently exfoliate with mild suction and mild exfoliants, extract pores painlessly, all while simultaneously infusing numerous antioxidants and plumping hyaluronic acid into the deep tissues of your skin. The result is extremely clean, noticeably plumper, hydrated skin. You will possess a glow to your complexion that will last for about a week. This painless, clinical treatment takes 30 minutes and the cost is $175 but we have an amazing summer special going on please call our office to get the details.

Our aesthetician can also step up this already fabulous treatment to the Hydrafacial Elite, which also includes a specialty serum vial and LED light therapy . Infusing a specialized concoction of Dermal Repair serum or Growth Factor serum will result in increased collagen production. LED light therapy specifically chosen for your skin concerns will build collagen, reduce inflammation, reduce bacteria, and improve overall complexion appearance. The Hydrafacial Elite is a painless, one hour treatment and the cost is $250.00

CONFESSIONS OF AN EXPERT: WHAT’S INSIDE EMILY MCLAUGHLIN’S BEAUTY CABINET?

73303 Emily McLaughlin Aesthetician/Skincare Specialist

Dear reader,

My name is Emily McLaughlin and I wanted to take a moment to share with you my skin care regimen.  At Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery we offer only medical grade and prescription strength products that will achieve the best results for your skin. That means that the concentrations of ingredients in our products are higher than the ingredients in the products you might buy over the counter, or at a department store. I try to be as consistent as possible with both my morning and evening regimen as well as getting monthly exfoliating treatments. I always tell my patient’s that it’s just like going to the gym; the more consistent you are with your skin, the more results you see!

My main concern is age prevention and acne. My skin is oily, which is caused by overactive sebaceous activity. I also still fight acne at the age of 32. With this in mind, suppressing oil production, inflammation, clearing up break outs and preventing aging is key to my personal complexion success. I have found the perfect combination of products that are aggressive without exacerbating inflammation. My skin has never looked better! My regimen currently consists of ZO SkinHealth by Dr. Obagi and we carry this line at all of our locations. Below you will find my skin care regimen/daily routine. I have provided an explanation for each product that I use. I hope you find this educational as well as helpful.

AM

  • Oilacleanse  – Cleanser for oily skin that provides a light exfoliation using jojoba beads while removing oil, impurities and make up.
  • Exfoliating Polish – a scrub with fine granules called magnesium crystals (feels like a sugar scrub.) It exfoliates dead skin, smooths the complexion and promotes blood circulation, allowing your products to penetrate better
  • Cebatrol Pads – 2% salicylic pads that help to normalize pore size, remove inflammatory agents that cause irritation and aides in the prevention of acne
  • Daily Power Defense– a serum that repairs damaged cells, protects against future damage and contains powerful anti-oxidants that help to fight and protect your skin from free radicals in the air. These free radicals attack your skin throughout the day and can cause damage. It has a silky, moisturizing feel to it. Everyone should use this product.
  • Smart Tone SPF 50 – This sunscreen is awesome! It adjusts to the pigment of your skin and helps to even out your tone using vitamin C.  This formula creates a nice, natural glow for your skin.  The more you rub it in, the darker the shade. It protects your skin from UVA, UVB and HEV rays.  Great for underneath your make up or as a standalone natural tint.

PM

  • Oilacleanse– See above.
  • Vita Scrub– this is an invigorating scrub that is slightly more aggressive than the exfoliating polish, it combines chemical exfoliation with physical exfoliation (micro beads) it removes dead skin cells, dirt, excess sebum (oil), white heads and black heads.
  • Cebatrol Pads– See above.
  • Aknetrol– this is a 10% Benzoyl Peroxide lotion. It helps to reduce oil and increases cell turn over. When used in combination with the Salicylic in the Cebatrol pads, it helps to kill the bacteria that causes acne. (Propionibacterium, or better known as p. acnes.bacteria)
  •  Offects Intense Eye Repair– this eye cream uses retinols and peptides to gently exfoliate the delicate skin around the eyes. This improves fine lines, wrinkles and the overall texture and tone of the skin. It also contains optical diffusers to reduce the appearance of dark circles, as well as soothing agents that help to decrease puffiness.

I also use the Offects Sulfur Masque occasionally as both a mask, and a spot treatment. It delivers maximum strength sulfur medication to acne blemishes. Can be used on face, neck, chest and back!

Ask me about the new ZO 3- step peel that we now offer. I have just finished my 3rd one and my skin looks incredible!

Retinol Usage + Summer Time = Safe?

Andrea

We asked Aesthetician Andrea Bailey what her thoughts were on Retinol usage during the spring and summer months. It is a very popular topic in our office as many patients ask her this important question. Retinol and Retinoic Acid (Tretinoin) are Vitamin A derivatives that provide numerous benefits for our skin. They exfoliate, build collagen, have antioxidant properties, reduce acne, and unclog pores. Retinols also repair and prevent wrinkles, texture, and sun-damage. Retinol is the most important component in our skin health arsenal. Because of its exfoliating properties, many patients worry it will cause their skin to be too sensitive to UV exposure during the summer months. As long as you are wearing daily sunscreen of SPF30 or higher you are safe to use retinol all year long. However, Andrea does recommend using your retinol at night, instead of the morning. You must also reapply SPF every 2 hours when experiencing direct UV exposure, as we often do in the warmer months while enjoying outdoor activities.  Andrea’s personal favorite technique for sunscreen reapplication is the Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral SPF50 brush, which is available for purchase at most of the Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery locations. This product will not interfere with your makeup as it comes in a loose powdered formulation and built-in brush for easy application. This product is actually not makeup, but rather crushed titanium dioxide and zinc oxide with antioxidants, so it is very user-friendly. The Colorescience brush is also perfect for men and children. Andrea loves this brush so much she keeps one in her car and one in her handbag. So yes, use your retinol throughout the year as directed by your Medical Aesthetician and as always wear sunscreen daily and don’t forget to reapply.

Enjoy your summer and remember, tans will fade but wrinkles do not!

Methods to Force Your Skin to Improve and Repair Itself!

kim Kim Lindsey, Aesthetician

Q: What is a good anti-aging product regimen?

A: Topical key elements for healthy skin are as an important regimen as your daily oral dose of vitamins. Everyone should be using a medical grade foundation of topical products beginning with a good cleanser, toner, topical vitamin A, C, antioxidants, peptides, growth factors and sunscreen.

Q: What is the average topically applied product penetration rate?

A: The approximate amount is in the region of only 7-10%.

Q: How can I improve the product penetration rate?

A: Our skin has a layer of dead cells piling up as a barrier to the world. Getting through this barrier and exfoliation the dead cells off is a key to increasing the penetration rate of products. This can be done utilizing scrubs, masques, microdermabrasion, using a cosmetic beauty roller and chemical peels.

Q: What is a cosmetic beauty roller?

A: This is a rolling micro needling device that can be used regularly at home to comfortably penetrate the dead skin cells by creating microscopic holes (0.2-0.3mm) allowing for more than 80 % better product penetration! This home treatment will increase your product results dramatically.

Q: How is Medical Micro Needling different than using a home beauty roller?

A: A cosmetic roller is designed primarily to increase your product penetration rate while a Medical Micro Needling treatment is a non-ablative way to force the skin’s natural ability to create new cell turnover, collagen, and elastin for a healthier, younger looking skin. This is done by stimulating a wound healing cascade caused by controlled injury with micro needles that range from a depth of 0.5-3.0mm depending on the condition you are treating. This treatment can be comfortably done by your Aesthetician after applying a topical numbing cream. The down time is typically only a few hours of appearing as you have a sunburn.

Q: How do Chemical Peels help improve skin?

A: A chemical peel is a controlled and safe way to injure the sluggish dead skin, stimulating rejuvenation of collagen effecting your overall complexion and skin quality. Your Aesthetician chooses from a variety of safe acids that are specifically designed to encourage new cell turnover and slough off old dead and damaged skin cells. The down time is depending on the strength of the peel, and your regeneration rate. The average person may experience some degree of peeling, redness, and tightness of the treated areas for approximately 5-7 days. Many clinical treatments like chemical peels and micro needling will achieve more effective results after a series of 3.

For more information on a professional, personalized skin care regimen contact a qualified Aesthetician at www.pvps.com or give us a call at 904-273-6200

How To Minimize The Appearance Of Scars

Would you like to keep your skin smooth, healthy, and free of scars? There are a few steps you can take to keep your skin clear:

Avoid Acne Scars

Acne can be embarrassing and painful for teenagers, but it can also leave long-lasting scars. Even adults sometimes find that they are still troubled by frequent breakouts (especially when they are going through hormonal changes. The following tips can help you avoid acne scars:

  • The best way to avoid acne scars is to prevent breakouts in the first place whenever possible. Do your best to keep your pores clear and stop oil from getting on your face. Keep your hair pulled back, don’t touch your face with your hands, and choose your makeup and skin care products carefully.
  • Never pop zits once you have a breakout. This ruptures the skin and spread infection.
  • See a dermatologist if your acne is serious. You may need medication or other more intense treatment to stop breakouts and keep acne scars from forming.

Help Incisions Heal

Most scars that aren’t acne scars are made by cuts or incisions. Almost any deep cut will leave a scar, but you can minimize the appearance of the resulting scar by helping your body heal properly.

Start by considering stitches right away. Getting stiches can help the wound heal and keep the scar much smaller. It is also important to keep the wound clean and covered. Keeping the skin in the area moist rather than letting it dry out can also help the incision heal better.

You should also avoid too much sun exposure since sun damage could leave a scar looking darker or make it harder for your skin to heal.

Help Scars Shrink And Fade

While you can’t always prevent a scar from forming, you can often minimize the appearance of the scar, help it shrink or fade the scar. Sometimes it just takes patience as you wait for your skin to heal. You can often speed up the process by using silicone bandages to keep the area clean, moist, and covered.

If you have scars that you’d like to make less noticeable, consider Fractional Resurfacing. This treatment helps to rejuvenate your skin, promote the production of collagen, smooth out the skin, minimize discoloration, and reduce the appearance of scars. If you’d like to learn more about this treatment, schedule a consultation at Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery.
